Programme

Workshops

Our 12th Annual Scientific Meeting will be preceded by two specialised workshops – the BD and Axim Ultrasound Workshop and the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Workshop – as well as the Welcome Reception and Exhibition Opening on 6 September.

Ultrasound Workshop

Brought to you by BD and Axim

This interactive workshop will allow you to harness your biopsy as well as your biopsy marker placement technique on phantoms. The goal of the workshop is to share tips, share experiences, and acquire knowledge from your peers.

We will have 5 workstations, each with a facilitator who has a special interest in biopsy and marker placement. Equipment will include tethered and non-tethered vacuum biopsy systems, core biopsy needles, and ultrasound visible markers.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Workshop

Brought to you by the Philip Sceales and Janet Antrobus Cancer Research Trust

This workshop focusses on developing a good foundation to achieve the best outcomes for patients undergoing breast surgery. Breast conservation therapy, level one oncoplastic procedures with an emphasis on techniques that can be used in routine practice, and an introduction to breast reconstruction will be covered.

The workshop is designed to:

– Create a solid foundation for ongoing education in breast cancer care

– Create a relevant educational opportunity to further knowledge regarding oncoplastic surgical techniques

– Stimulate networking and discussions about ways to optimise patient care

BIGOSA 2024 Ethics Session

The Lancet Breast Cancer Commission – The Southern African Perspective

Session Synopsis

Despite tremendous advances in breast cancer research and treatment over the past three decades—leading to a reduction in breast cancer mortality of over 40% in some high-income countries—gross inequities remain, with many groups being systematically left behind, ignored, and even forgotten. The work of the Lancet Breast Cancer Commission highlights crucial groups, such as those living with metastatic breast cancer, and identifies how the hidden costs of breast cancer and associated suffering are considerable, varied, and have far-reaching effects. The Commission offers a forward-looking and optimistic road map for how the health community can course correct to address these urgent challenges in breast cancer

At BIGOSA 2024, we will present the Southern African perspective on this important commission and the 90-minute session will allow participants to obtain Ethics CPD points. Session sub-topics include Metastatic Breast Cancer, the Cost of Breast Cancer Treatment, Communication and Collaboration to Improve Care, and Priorities for Southern Africa. The speakers in this interactive session will participate in person and via live Zoom interviews, and each sub-topic will conclude with a panel discussion. The audience will be invited to engage in Q&A as well as voting. Speakers include Fatima Cardoso, Charlotte Coles, Francois Malherbe, Rene Krause, Jenny Edge, and Liana Roodt.
